This year marks International Compliance Association’s 25th anniversary, and to celebrate this milestone we have created a special publication: 25 Years of ICA: Building a Profession.
When ICA was founded in 2001, compliance was barely recognised as a distinct profession. Money laundering reporting officers often worked in isolation, regulatory frameworks were fragmented, and recognised professional standards were virtually non-existent. A quarter of a century later, the picture could not be more different, and ICA has been at the heart of that transformation.
From emerging function to strategic necessity
Today, ICA counts more than 35,000 members across 155 countries, and has educated and qualified over 200,000 professionals worldwide. What began as a vision to bring rigour and recognition to an emerging profession, has grown into a global community united by shared standards, expertise and ethical purpose.
Our anniversary publication reflects on 25 years of progress, celebrating ICA’s community who have helped shape the compliance landscape, as well as considering the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead.
ICA Managing Director Rob Phillipson traces the compliance profession’s journey, from the major regulatory shifts in the early 2000s, through decades of enforcement actions and rising compliance standards, to the sophisticated, tech-driven compliance environment professionals navigate today.
As Rob outlines: “By establishing clear competency frameworks and professional standards, ICA has shaped how organisations structure their compliance functions, recruit talent and invest in professional development.”
“Furthermore, by sharing case studies, research, thought leadership and practitioner insights, ICA has helped define best practices in areas ranging from customer due diligence to sanctions screening, from fraud prevention to governance frameworks. This knowledge base, developed through decades of experience across thousands of institutions, provides collective wisdom that benefits the entire sector.”
Timeline of milestones
The publication includes a timeline of key events throughout ICA’s history, illustrating how the association has grown and adapted alongside the profession it serves.
From the launch of foundational Certificate qualifications, through the establishment of the Diploma programmes that became a global benchmark for compliance officers and MLROs, to the development of Specialist Certificates in areas including cryptocurrency and AI – the timeline charts ICA’s story of consistent innovation and responsiveness to emerging risks.
ICA's partnership with Alliance Manchester Business School, the University of Manchester, continues to ensure that these qualifications provide both real-world relevance and academic credibility, a combination that has seen ICA Diplomas specified as hiring prerequisites by employers worldwide.
Members at the heart of the story
At ICA, our members are the driving force behind everything we do, and in this anniversary publication we feature the stories of some long-standing ICA members. While enjoying varied career paths, they all share how ICA qualifications and membership have supported them along the way.
Whether they joined ICA when new to the compliance field, or when transitioning into a specialist area, our members highlight the tangible value of belonging to a professional association with rigorous standards at its core. Their personal accounts speak to the difference that continuing professional development, internationally recognised credentials, and a supportive global community can make at every stage of a compliance career.
Looking ahead: Compliance in the next 25 years
This anniversary publication concludes with members’ looking ahead to the main compliance challenges of the future, and how ICA can help to meet them. From the regulatory implications of AI and data-driven systems, to the evolving demands of global anti money laundering frameworks, the compliance function will continue to face complex, fast-moving risks.
ICA's commitment is clear: to remain as agile and responsive as it has been over the past 25 years, developing expert-level training and qualifications that keep pace with emerging risks and equip professionals with the knowledge and skills to protect the integrity of the global financial system.
