Title: Social Engineering – going beyond Phishing emails

Mark Johnson, CITP, delivers a practical and highly engaging demonstration of a modern social engineering attack on a regulated firm, using real-world data.

Key learning:

  • Learn how criminals identify vulnerable targets via Google, social media and the Deep Web
  • Learn about the methods used by criminals to profile financial services employees
  • See how false online personas are used to interact with vulnerable people in key roles
  • Understand how socially engineered relationships are then exploited to facilitate a range of crimes
  • Understand why email phishing campaigns alone are not sufficient to effectively train your staff

Practical demonstrations and exercises:

  • Researching an employee online based solely on the information displayed on an access card or business card
  • Finding an employee’s friends, family, address, charitable causes, sporting interests and much more in minutes
  • Exploring the Deep Web and taking the investigation further
  • Creating, adapting and using fake online persona’s to launch the social engineering attack via triadic closure
