Travelling in cyber-safe mode

In today’s globalised economy many of us need to travel far and wide on business. We might also choose to take our work with us when we travel on holiday. So what are the main things we need to think about in order to travel in ‘cyber-safe mode’? ICA have put together some top tips, which may seem obvious, but none-the-less are good reminders for best practice.

  1. Always back up your important files before you go and leave the backup in a safe place
  2. Use data encryption for your portable devices, if possible
  3. Make sure that you use strong passwords for all of your devices
  4. Consider having a separate ‘travel laptop’ holding only the data you need for the trip
  5. Be wary of free WiFi zones as some of them might allow your data to be intercepted
  6. Assume that everything you do online is being monitored by local security officials
  7. Avoid using your credit card online or logging on to online banking while abroad
  8. Delete all files and recover all printouts if you use a hotel business centre
  9. Avoid leaving your devices in your hotel room and plan for this when you pack
  10. Think twice before accepting USB sticks or CDs from anyone
